Who Sleeping Lies Beyond

(for GA & FA; an Advent Poem)

Who sleeping lies beyond
The boundary fence at street’s end
Black the painted stringers
Metal posts, stiff, still, sentineled
Against passing strangers
Who would walk the wooded hill.

They cannot stop who chooses to descend
In silence, swift as spoken word.
He who purposes the end
Of sleep, of all, when his voice is heard.

Swift as sign, swifter still than light
He soon arriving will bring bright day
Forevermore banishing black-bound night
With all of night’s cold, thin cruelty.
Nova will he be and will he make
Who live, or living sleep, together wake.
