Easter Allegro

It seemed alive the way it moved
And fooled I stopped to watch;
To puzzle what little thing hopped
Over, lively and to what end,
New Spring green grass this bright day.
Chipmunks and squirrels it could not be
Nor a nervous sparrow, mouse or mole.
The last two slept on yet, too early
In the year for them to rise.
Yet its pauses and short skips
Were perfectly timed to mimic
Their alert timidity.
In the lady blue sky a few swift clouds
Skipped by, budding forsythia waving
Hello frantically and brightly goodbye.
The very air seemed smile;
Laughter a spirited breeze
That stooped from flying clouds
To first Spring flowers and waking trees.
While looking on I saw even this
I took as life was so in a flood of bliss
Into sere leaf, last year’s.  New proof
Of life beyond grim death, and of living love.
