Come and See!

Some of you may know that my wife and I have recently started a business on the Internet, a web based bookstore called “The Christian Book Corner” or t-CBC for short. Now, we haven’t finished building the thing, but the doors are open. You’re welcome to drop buy…oops, that really was a typo…and visit, watch us move stuff around, add shelves and products, and maybe be favorably inclined to pick up a thing or two.

The first thing I want to tell you is that this isn’t another airport or mall bookstore. You won’t find the top 75 best sellers in the top 600 categories, here. But don’t go away sad…or just go away…, because, you see, we don’t think that most of that stuff is worth your time anyway. And, despite the “Christian” in the title, this isn’t some kind of “New Awakenings” place full of fluffy good feeling, “ten things you need to know to get you to heaven” or “how I found salvation after a life of bad drugs” kind of books. There’s nothing on an Oprah list going to show up here, either.

Nah, what we’re doing is simple, offering good stuff with the right ending, always. And, the right ending is always the happiest one, the truest one.

Given the kind of place we have in mind, figuring out how to “advertise” it has proven a bit of a challenge!  We’re meeting every other week with a sort of  internet-retailing coach, trying to adapt our vision to the realities of internet marketing while still communicating to the casual shopper what we hope he or she will, upon reading our copy, come to want to find.

Here’s the text this collaboration has just yielded for the t-CBC.com home page.

“With the staggering array of natural disasters, wars, coups, and economic crises in the world today, not to mention the more “ordinary” day to day struggles every human being has to face, finding sources of inspiration, encouragement, and simple stable faith is more important than ever before. It’s so easy to get caught up in media hype, playing the “sensational” aspect of world events for all it is worth, when it comes to everyday conversational interchange, and in consequence to find ourselves striving for mere selfish gain alongside our family members, neighbors, and vocational colleagues without giving much sustained depth of thought to exemplifying good solid moral values and thereby discovering and upholding what is truly important in life.

“Spiritual books provide an invaluable perspective on current events and surprisingly often reveal real and effective answers to everyday life problems. Reading top literature by Christian authors, whether fiction or non-fiction, will help you to understand what religious faith is and how reliance on faith will strengthen character and progressively transform a person’s interior experience of the Truth of Christ and the Reality of Love. There are of course many different types of Christian and Catholic books and literature — for readers of all different ages and from writers of all different times and places in the history of human existence. Best-selling religious books and music also make uniquely inspirational gifts for friends and family members that show how much you care about them and their quality of life. Whether you are looking for Christian or Catholic books and films that are intellectually stimulating and educational or simply wholesomely entertaining, there is a great selection of spiritual literature available to assist you and people you care about in that earthly journey which precedes our eternal walk with God.

“At the t-CBC.com online book store we recommend for your consideration a wide selection of highly inspirational Christian and Catholic books, films, and music. Because we are a small online based Christian bookstore we do not have the costly overhead of traditional religious book stores. These savings are passed along to you, allowing us to offer inexpensive Catholic and Christian literature from a variety of quality publishers and distributors at the best possible everyday discount prices. As Christians who want to be a resource for other believers, we are more than happy to answer any questions you may have and look forward to helping you discover books, films, and music, here, that will simultaneously rest your soul, deepen your faith, and stimulate your mind.”  [end of quotation]

Me again. In a perfect universe our new store would be a place where you could actually drop in. There’d be a pot of water ready for tea, or some coffee if that was your poison; maybe even a dash of spirits for the spirited. You’d find a spot to sit a while, much like you see in our picture at the site, and read and talk and, maybe, grow…quietly. Because, to be honest, we really aren’t in it for the money. We’re in it for the Truth and for all our immortal souls  We’re in it for our world..

  1. Pietro. Good ad! Went to your website and registered. You might also add novels by A.J. Cronin, i always found them to be not only readable but inspirational as well. My $0.02 worth for the day. Buona Fortuna!
    Ciao, Riccardo

    • Thanks, Richie. We’ll look into it.

  2. Sounds like a good idea to me. You won’t get rich on it, but you will surely enrich others by the word you share. Fr. Simeon

    • Thank you Father. Riches are counted differently in the :business’ we’ve started.

  3. Very inspiring. Most of the time, the motivation in starting a business is money. You have my admiration and I sincerely hope that your bookstore will go a long way.

    • Thank you very much. I am sorry to have been so long replying. Life sometimes interferes with desire.
