Backyard Bestiary II

BACKYARD BESTIARY II

THE CAT BEYOND THE FENCE

The cat beyond the fence would deny
He has no right to parade by
The bird feeders every morning
In haughty grandeur, stately majesty,
Expecting some gold finch to fall fawning
Into his open mouth, sacrifice adoring.

What really happens though is this:
The cat just waits for the next mistake
In the bush below the feeder.  As if
It will ever happen he sphinx like sits
Or slinks along the fence skirting the defense
Of the birds who’ve already seen him.

He’s been at it every day for some years now.
I have yet to hear his first triumphant “MEOW!”
